A pretty good conversion of the classic game 'Asteroids'. You won't find any bells & whistles here, but it does present solid gameplay and smooth flowing graphics, in the then-new EGA "high-res" graphics mode. The only real problem is that the keys take a bit of getting used to ... using the arrow keys would've been much easier! If you can get used to the odd key placement, you'll probably like it. (Pay attention to the keyboard key instructions when the game starts.)EGA Roids (DOS) is a classic arcade-style shooter game that was designed for the DOS platform in the 1980s and 1990s. The game is heavily inspired by the famous arcade title Asteroids, but with a unique twist. It was created to take advantage of the EGA graphics standard, offering a simple yet engaging experience for players on early personal computers. Asteroids-Inspired Gameplay: Like Asteroids, players control a spaceship in an open space environment filled with moving asteroids. The goal is to shoot the asteroids to break them into smaller pieces. If an asteroid hits the player's spaceship, they lose a life. EGA Graphics: The game uses EGA graphics, which offer a palette of 16 colors and provide basic visuals such as simple vector-style representations of asteroids, the player's ship, and projectiles. While the graphics were rudimentary by today's standards, they were quite advanced at the time and gave a distinct look to the game. Movement and Controls: Players control their spaceship’s movement with keyboard commands, such as using arrow keys or other specific keys to rotate, thrust, and fire. The spaceship can move freely in all directions within the game’s environment, similar to the classic arcade gameplay style, where inertia and momentum play a key role in navigation. Asteroids and Enemy Ships: Asteroids come in different sizes. The player needs to shoot them to break them into smaller pieces, each of which can be destroyed. As players progress through levels, they may encounter enemy ships or space debris, adding more danger to the already chaotic asteroid field. The game typically gets progressively harder as the asteroid field becomes denser, and enemies become more aggressive. Power-ups and Bonuses: In some versions of EGA Roids, there may be power-ups scattered across the play area. These can give the player temporary advantages, such as: Extra Firepower: Increases the rate of fire or power of the spaceship's shots. Shields: Provides temporary protection from asteroid collisions. Speed Boosts: Increases the movement speed of the ship.
